EPHE 380 LABORATORY INFORMATION, 2018
In the laboratory portion of the course you will complete two major assignments, a poster presentation worth 10% of your course grade and a research project and paper worth 20% of your course grade. Both of these assignments are explained on subsequent pages and will be explained further during the laboratory sessions.
Important Points
1. You must pass the laboratory portion of the course to pass the class. A failing grade in the
laboratory portion of the course will result in a failing grade no matter what your average grade is at the end of the course.
2. You must attend each laboratory session. Missed sessions cannot be made up. Failure to attend laboratory sessions will result in an automatic fail of the laboratory portion of the course, and thus the course as a whole. I do realize that sometimes things happen in life. As such, you will be granted one unexcused absence from the laboratory portion of the course. If you miss more than one laboratory session, I will fail you in this course.
3. You cannot attend another laboratory session if you miss yours. You have an assigned laboratory session and that is the only one you may attend. If you show up for another laboratory session the laboratory instructor will ask you to leave.
4. There are no extensions to due dates for assignments. Any late work will be automatically assigned a grade of zero without exception.
5. All submitted work must be type written in Times Roman 12 point font and double spaced. All written work must also meet APA standards and guidelines.
Student Led Research Project
Within your laboratory section you will be divided into two groups. Each group will be given an experiment and your job as a group will be to run the experiment and submit a research manuscript based on your findings at the end of the semester. The experimental topic will be assigned to each group by the lab instructor - however - your input into the topic and experimental design is encouraged as changes will be permitted with the approval of your lab instructor. Note, changes may not be permitted at the instructors discretion.
In the first laboratory session of the semester you will be assigned your group and your research topic. Very quickly you will begin data collection but concurrent with that you will begin working on your research manuscript. See the laboratory timeline for details. As the semester progresses, you will continue to collect data and work on the methods section of your manuscript. Following data collection, you will conduct the appropriate data analyses, generate figures, and write the results section of your paper. Finally, you will write the discussion section of the paper and add a title page, abstract, references, and the other bits and pieces needed to have a complete manuscript.
Research Poster Presentation
Concurrent with your work on your research project, you will research a topic related to a motor control disorder and prepare a poster for presentation to the class and to the university audience as a whole at the EPHE 380 mini conference (see below). You will have a choice of topics that you can choose from - however each student will have a unique topic and focus.
EPHE 380 Mini Conference. On Thursday February 8, our class will host a mini-conference in the McKinnon building foyer where students will present their posters to the department and the rest of the university as a whole (people who walk by and are interested). Note: participation in the mini-conference is optional but you will not be able to achieve a "A" grade without participating. The conference will occur during scheduled class time. So, on that day (February 8) there is no lecture.
